Hobbies

05.08.2021

So, I haven't posted much here lately. (Says the person with 8 previous blog posts.) Thought I'd take some time and toss a post together. Today, we're going to talk about HOBBIES!

Lately, I haven't had a lot of time to indulge my hobbies, and I'm no master of any of them, but I have MANY of them. And I'm going to list them here.

Sketching

I love sketching. My subjects vary - anywhere from cute pumpkins (hello!) to mountainscapes. I am EXTREMELY amateurish, self-taught, and limited in skill (which can be said about ALL art I engage in) but I enjoy it. I use quite a few different mediums - pencils, pens, charcoal, watercolour pencils, pastels, markers. My favourite is probably pencil.

Painting

In my mind I haven't done a lot of painting, and I mean "a lot" is a relative term anyway. Again, complete amateur. I love bright colours and rainbows. As with sketching, my subjects vary - anywhere from nighttime desertscapes to abstract art to galaxies. I also work with two different mediums - acrylic and watercolour.

Knitting/Crochet

It's not often (and usually in winter) that I engage in either of these. I've been working on a throw blanket for two years that's currently sitting in a bag in the corner of my bedroom. I've done touques, scarves, baby booties, corset sleeves, blankets and various little toys as well.

Woodburning

I love woodburning. I love the feel of the hot tip melting into the wood, leaving it's mark. It started with an arrowhead-shaped scene I burnt for my dad and has grown into much more. Moving to the country excites me because I can find my own wood to work with and be inspired that way.

Hunting/Fishing

It's been a while (thanks COVID) since I've gone hunting, as all my firearms reside in another province, but I love a good hunt. Anything from ducks and partridge to deer and moose - but only things that I'm willing to eat myself. That was the very first rule we had growing up - you had to eat what you killed (except in protective situations), so don't shoot anything that you wouldn't eat.

Fishing is one of the most relaxing things one can do with their time. I was lucky enough to find a timeframe where my dad and I could rent a houseboat last summer and hit the water for some fishing. It was one heck of a trip (involving bears, mosquitos, a wicked thunderstorm, and an entire night of cribbage) but we caught some nice (and tasty) fish.

Archery/Knife-Throwing/Axe-Throwing

Archery fits right in with my hunting enjoyments, though I'm not a very skilled archer. This is where country living will fit perfectly for me. I'm planning on setting up an archery range and knife/axe throwing targets at the new place. Finally, I'll be able to shoot and throw without the neighbours calling the cops on me (for what is perfectly legal!).

Tech

I love creating websites, I love testing apps, making spreadsheets, my interests in tech run pretty much the whole gamut.

Gaming/Puzzles

I used to be VERY into Call of Duty. When Call of Duty 4 came out, I spent HOURS playing that game daily. Yes, daily. There was a group of us from across North America that would get together and play - mostly FFA. We'd do silly stuff like have knife tournaments where the only weapon you could use was the knife. Lately, it's been more about Minecraft, Animal Crossing, and Roblox. Look what parenthood and age has done to me!

Puzzles are amazing. I love number puzzles, word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles. Good times!

So... yeah. I'm sure I've overlooked some. But I think I've covered the major ones. Hit me up on e-mail or Masto if you'd like to talk about any of these (or your own!)

Gosh, I'm boring myself even.
